Ep. 19: Flipping the Script About Ageism

“Aging is not just something annoying old people do. It’s something we embark on the day we’re born.”

Summary:

AGEISM sucks and it has us brainwashed to believe all sorts of myths and untruths about aging. Negative stereotypes about aging are everywhere, and we are culturally conditioned to feel a certain way about the aging process.

In today’s episode, our guest Ashton Applewhite sets the record straight on ageism – the last socially acceptable prejudice, how it developed, why it’s harmful, and how to change it.

Show Notes:

Ashton is a pioneer, speaker, writer, blogger, author, and internationally recognized expert on ageism. She began investigating ageism in her mid-50s, and what she discovered led her to write her book, This Chair Rocks – A Manifesto Against Ageism, as well as creating a number of other resources to combat ageism. She speaks widely at venues that have included the TED Mainstage and the United Nations, and is a leading spokesperson for a movement to mobilize against discrimination on the basis of age.
